Benagil Cave is a natural wonder located in the Algarve region of Portugal. If you’re staying in Lagos, visiting the Benagil Cave makes a perfect day trip.

The cave is located next to the Praia de Benagil beach in the small fishing town of Benagil.
Alternatively, you can take a boat tour from elsewhere. You can get a boat tour from Lagos, Albufeira or Portimão.
This article will detail these options in more detail.
How To Get To Benagil Town From Lagos:
To get to the town of Benagil from Lagos, you can travel by either bus or car.
The bus to Benagil is very long from Lagos, taking around 1 hour. This is mainly due to the fact that there is no direct bus route.
You can take the bus operated by Rede Expressos or Renex from Lagos bus station to the town of Lagoa. Please note that this bus only departs once every 2 hours.
This bus takes 35 minutes and costs around €5.
Once in Lagoa, you need to take a second bus to Benagil – this bus has only a few departures a day. This bus will take around 15 minutes.
Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Lagoa to Benagil – this will cost around €10.
Driving to Benagil from Lagos is much quicker and easier than taking the bus. The drive is just 30 minutes.
If you have a hired car, then this is definitely the best option.
Uber operates in the Algarve. Taking an Uber or taxi to Benagil will cost between €35 – €45 one way.
Getting Inside The Cave
You can only enter the Benagil cave by sea.
You can drive to the cave and see it from above, you will be able to see through the roof in the cave but there is no way of entering the cave by foot.
It is possible to swim to the cave but this is not recommended as the seas can be rough. Even for experienced swimmers it can still be dangerous.
This is definitely the best option if you want to be able to get out and walk inside Benagil cave.
There are many organised kayak or paddleboard tours that you can join. You’ll be given your own kayak/paddleboard however you’ll be led by an experienced team member just in case you get into difficulties.
These tours tend to last between 1 and 2 hours and prices start at around €30 per person. You’ll also be able to explore many other nearby caves and grottoes as well as Benagil Cave.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to paddle for the entire duration. On the way back, usually you will be pulled by a support boat.
You can alternatively take a boat tour to the cave if you want something less strenuous/active.
This is a super easy way to get there however be aware that most of the boat tours do not allow you to get off the boat so you’ll be able to see the cave but probably won’t be able to walk inside it. If you do really want to do this, then you should hire a kayak or paddleboard.
There are many companies that run these boat tours in Benagil and in the surrounding towns nearby. These can even be found in towns such as Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos.
Boat Trip from Lagos to Benagil Cave
As mentioned, another option would be to take a boat tour from Lagos to Benagil cave. These tours tend to last around 2 hours and are one of the easiest and most convenient ways to see the cave.
You get the added benefit of getting to cruise along the Algarve coastline and discover many other beautiful hidden beaches, coves and grottoes.
The main thing to note is that the majority of these tours do not allow you to disembark the boat in the cave so you will not be allowed to enter the cave.
You will however be able to see the marvellous cave from the boat. Another benefit to these tours is that they often have a tour guide who will be able to give lots of interesting information about the cave.
You can get really good deals on these tours – you can book onto a tour online. I’ve seen tours starting at €39 per person.
