After August Scholz passed away in the late 1800s, the bar changed hands but stayed closely tied to the city’s social scene.
And even before the 1900s rolled around, it was already hosting big moments like early UT football celebrations and political gatherings.
Recognized as a Texas Legend
That long run of food, beer, and conversation eventually earned it official recognition from the Texas Legislature in 1966.
Not long after, Scholz Garten was recognized as a Texas Historic Landmark and added to the National Register of Historic Places.
