This place opened in 1960 and has been turning heads ever since, thanks to its over-the-top Western theme and one giant food challenge that put it on the map.

You’ve probably seen it on TV. Finish a 72-ounce steak, shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad, and a roll—all in under an hour—and it’s free. Fail, and you’re out about $72.

Inside, the dining room looks like an Old West saloon had a party with a Texas souvenir shop. Think mounted longhorns and tables big enough to feed a ranch crew.
There’s even a raised platform for challenge participants, so everyone can get a front-row seat to the steak showdown.
But the fun doesn’t stop with food.
The Big Texan is part of a whole roadside complex that includes a gift shop stuffed with all things Texas, a brewery, an old-school shooting gallery, and a motel with Texas-shaped swimming pool.

Summer is the busiest season, especially with road trippers cruising along Route 66.
If you prefer fewer crowds, weekdays during the off-season (fall or spring) are your best bet.

The Big Texan is open daily from 10 AM to 10:30 PM.
Steaks range from around $25.72 to $55.72, depending on the cut and size. The 72-ounce challenge steak rings in at about $72 if you don’t finish it in time.

Getting There
You’ll find it right off I-40 at 7701 I-40 East in Amarillo.
It’s super easy to access whether you’re driving your own car, hauling an RV, or hitching a ride on their free limo shuttle.
