Where Is It?
Slot Canyon, also known as The Slot, is located inside Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Southern California, just outside the small desert town of Borrego Springs.
You’ll find the trailhead at the end of Buttes Pass Road, a short drive down a sandy dirt road off Highway 78.
Expect about a 2-hour drive from San Diego, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes from Palm Springs, and around 3 hours from Los Angeles, depending on traffic.

The Slot is one of the most famous hikes in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, and once you step inside, it’s easy to see why.
It takes you through an incredibly narrow sandstone slot canyon where the walls twist and tower overhead in places more than 40 feet high.
The route begins in a wide, sandy desert wash surrounded by rugged badlands and classic Anza-Borrego desert scenery.
Not long after, the entrance to the slot canyon suddenly appears in the rocky hillside, and the landscape changes fast.
The wide open desert disappears, and you are suddenly walking through tight passages where the curved walls gradually climb higher and higher around you.
At several points, the canyon tightens to just 2 feet wide, where you need walk sideways through rock corridors as sunlight pours in from above.
And eventually, you’ll reach a natural rock bridge, and beyond it, the canyon walls begin to get shorter, signaling the end of the slot.
If you turn around here and go back the same way you came, the hike is only about 1 mile round trip.
However, if you complete the loop through the canyon and return along the sandy wash, the total distance is about 2.3 miles.
Whichever path you choose, the trail is considered easy to moderate, though the tight spaces and uneven sandy footing can make it a little tricky in spots.
Most people finish it in 1 to 1.5 hours, but photo stops along the way often add extra time.

Timing matters a lot here.
Temperatures in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park often rise above 100°F in summer, making November through April the most comfortable times for this hike.
Winter is especially great because daytime highs usually sit between 65°F and 70°F.
Start Early
Getting an early start is worth it because morning light filters into the canyon and makes the curved sandstone walls glow in soft shades of orange.
Arriving before 9:00 AM actually helps you beat the crowds and find parking more easily, since this is one of the most popular hikes in the park.
Trailhead Access
There is a $10 day-use fee per vehicle for hiking The Slot, so make sure you have cash on hand.
The road to the trailhead can be rough and sandy, and while most cars can make it in dry conditions, vehicles with higher clearance handle the washboard sections better.
Flash Flood Safety
Flash floods are the biggest safety concern here because slot canyons can fill with water extremely quickly during desert storms.
Never enter the canyon if rain is in the forecast anywhere nearby, even if the sky above you looks clear.
What to Bring
Be sure to bring plenty of water, since there is little shade on the hike, and the desert air can dehydrate you faster than expected.
Cell service is not reliable in this part of the park, so download your map ahead of time or bring a GPS or an offline map to find the canyon entrance.

Since The Slot is a quick hike, there are several awesome spots nearby that are worth checking out.
You can explore the colorful rock formations at Fonts Point, which overlooks the famous Borrego Badlands and is often called the “Grand Canyon of California.”
Another cool stop is the Borrego Palm Canyon Trail, a 3-mile round-trip hike to one of the largest palm oases in California with a seasonal waterfall.
And if you drive through Borrego Springs, keep an eye out for the famous Galleta Meadows metal sculptures, which include over 130 prehistoric animal figures.
