1. Tadich Grill

Tadich Grill, located in San Francisco’s Financial District, is the oldest continuously run restaurant in California, having opened its doors in 1849.

This iconic restaurant started as a simple coffee stand by three Croatian immigrants and has since become a beloved place. 

Walking into Tadich Grill feels like stepping back in time with its art deco interior, dark wood panels and long wooden bar.

The restaurant is famous for its traditional seafood dishes including cioppino and Dungeness crab, all cooked over mesquite charcoal. 

Despite its old-school charm, Tadich Grill remains a bustling spot, especially at lunch and dinner, where you might rub elbows with San Francisco’s business elite. 

2. Frank Fat’s

Frank Fat’s, located in Sacramento, is a historic gem that has been serving delicious American Chinese cuisine since 1939. 

Founded by Chinese immigrant Frank Fat, this restaurant quickly became a favorite among politicians and lobbyists due to its proximity to the State Capitol. 

One of the most interesting stories about Frank Fat’s is how Frank’s honesty in returning a large Keno win to a customer led to the loan that helped him open the restaurant.

The menu features a delightful mix of dishes like honey walnut prawns, New York strip steak and the famous banana cream pie. 

The restaurant’s retro bar and elegant dining room will transport you to another era!

3. Chiaramonte’s Deli & Sausages

Chiaramonte’s Deli & Sausages, located in San Jose, has been a beloved family-owned spot since 1908. 

This charming deli is famous for its homemade Italian sausages which come in flavors like sweet, garlic and spicy hot. 

The deli was founded by Italian immigrants and has been serving the community with authentic Italian flavors for over a century.

One of the most popular items on the menu is the Italian sausage sandwich, known for its perfectly seasoned sausage and fresh sourdough bread. 

4. Casa Orinda

Casa Orinda, located in Orinda, has been serving up delicious meals since 1932. 

Founded by Montana cowboy Jack Snow, this Western-themed restaurant quickly became a local favorite. 

One of the most interesting aspects of Casa Orinda’s history is its past involvement in illegal activities during the 1960s.

The restaurant is famous for its pressure-fried chicken, prime beef and classic Italian pasta dishes, all made from scratch. 

Stepping inside feels like a journey back in time with dark wood decor, antique items and vintage photographs adorning the walls. 

5. Fenton’s Creamery

Fenton’s Creamery, located in Oakland, has been delighting ice cream lovers since 1894. 

Founded by Elbridge Seth Fenton, this historic creamery is famous for its handcrafted ice creams and sauces. 

One of the coolest things about Fenton’s is that it claims to be the birthplace of Rocky Road ice cream, a flavor invented by their candy maker George Farren.

However, this claim is disputed by Dreyer’s, which also claims to have created the flavor around the same time​. 

The creamery was even featured in Pixar’s animated film ‘Up’ which makes it a fun stop for movie fans. 

Despite a devastating fire in 2001, Fenton’s was rebuilt and continues to serve up its famous sundaes, like the Black & Tan.

6. The Old Clam House

The Old Clam House, located in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco, has been serving delicious seafood since 1861.

As the oldest continuously operating restaurant in its original location, it has a rich history tied to the city’s waterfront workers.

One of the coolest things about The Old Clam House is its famous clam chowder and cioppino, which have been local favorites for generations.

The restaurant was recently sold and reopened in 2022 by new owner Filomena Florese, who aims to preserve its historic charm while adding some Italian dishes to the menu. 

The Old Clam House also hosts fun events like oyster festivals and seafood boils throughout the year which makes it a lively spot for everyone.

7. Dinucci’s Restaurant

Dinucci’s Restaurant, located in Valley Ford, has been a beloved family-owned spot since 1968. 

Originally built in 1908 as the Depot Hotel by Mr and Mrs Barboni, it has a long history that adds to its charm. 

Known for its family-style Italian dinners, Dinucci’s is famous for its hearty minestrone soup and delicious pasta dishes. 

One interesting tidbit is that the restaurant claims to have a friendly ghost who haunts the restaurant.

The restaurant also hosts fun events like classic car shows which makes it a fun place to visit.

8. The Swiss Hotel

The Swiss Hotel, located on the historic Sonoma Plaza, has been a cherished family-owned establishment since 1923 when it was purchased by Mose Mastelotto. 

However, it has been known as the Swiss Hotel since 1892, when it was renamed by the Toroni family​. 

Originally built in 1850 by Don Salvador Vallejo, this charming spot offers both history and hospitality.

The hotel features five beautifully decorated guest rooms with views of the Plaza or the garden patio which is perfect for a cozy stay. 

The restaurant is famous for its wood-fired pizzas and classic Italian dishes which has made it a favorite among locals and visitors. 

One of the most interesting aspects is the historic barn on the property which once hid bottled wine during Prohibition.
