The 110-foot Virgin Falls is famous for one jaw-dropping trick that feels straight out of a fantasy movie.
Its water comes from an underground stream, bursts out of a cave, then disappears back into another cave at the bottom.
The area was actually designated as a “Pocket Wilderness” by Bowater in 1973 and is now protected by Tennessee’s Department of Environment and Conservation.
Expect spotty cell service, no visitor center, and only basic amenities at the trailhead.
Everything is left as nature intended, with nothing added to distract from the scenery.

Things To Do
The adventure begins on the Virgin Falls Trail, a 9-mile round-trip hike with about 900 feet of elevation gain.
Starting from the parking area, the trail winds through dense forest and classic karst terrain like cave openings, sinkholes, and disappearing streams.
You’ll also come across three waterfalls before the main event: Big Branch Falls, Big Laurel Falls, and Sheep Cave Falls.
Each one has its own vibe, with Big Laurel Falls standing out as a favorite where water spills from a rock overhang into a shaded pool.
