This isn’t your average road trip, it’s an adventure through the Alleghenies, packed with hidden gems, cool history, and way more personality than any big city could dream of.

So fill up the tank and get ready to meet the small towns that’ll totally steal your heart.

1. Bellefonte

Bellefonte, Pennsylvania

Bellefonte is a charming little town in the Alleghenies, about 18 minutes from Penn State, packed with 1800s brick buildings, cozy cafes, and one seriously pretty courthouse square.

It’s famous for its natural spring (the town’s name means “beautiful fountain”) and for being the hometown of seven governors.

If you’re into Victorian architecture, fishing in Spring Creek, or snapping pics of cute old train stations, this place will totally steal your heart.

2. Boalsburg

Just down the road from Bellefonte, Boalsburg has its own cool claim to fame—it’s one of the towns that claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, and yep, they throw a big parade to prove it.

This tiny town is all about historic charm, from the stone houses lining Main Street to the old-timey feel of the Boal Mansion, which even holds a lock of Napoleon’s hair.

Swing by for local shops, mountain views, and the kind of laid-back, small-town vibes that make you want to stay for pie and a porch chat.

It’s located along the Juniata River, with a walkable downtown that’s home to retro diners, interesting shops, and the historic Embassy Theatre.

Whether you’re grabbing a bite at a classic lunch counter or catching a local show, Lewistown brings big heart and old-school charm to your Alleghenies road trip.

Downtown’s got colorful murals, indie coffee shops, and a cool artsy vibe that makes it feel fresh without losing that small-town heart.

Not far from Huntingdon, the twin towns of Orbisonia and Rockhill Furnace are tiny but packed with old-school charm and seriously cool trains.

This is where you’ll find the East Broad Top Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge steam train that began rolling through the hills in the 1870s and resumed offering rides recently.

Wander through the Rockhill Trolley Museum, grab an ice cream, and get ready to feel like you time-traveled back to the golden age of railroads.

Both the East Broad Top Railroad and the Rockhill Trolley Museum close over winter. They typically reopen as follows:

  • East Broad Top Railroad: Early May through late October
  • Rockhill Trolley Museum: May through October

6. Everett

Everett is a quiet town with big energy.

It’s got Lincoln Highway roots, so the town’s historic charm reflects its connection to this iconic route, with old motels and vintage signs seen in some areas.

This spot’s great for a pit stop, whether you’re browsing antique shops, checking out the historic Union Hotel, or grabbing a bite at a casual diner.

Plus, it’s just minutes from the stunning Tenley Park, where you can stretch your legs on a forest trail or chill with a view of the mountains.

7. Bedford

Just a short drive from Everett, Bedford is a charming small town filled with history, architecture, and hot springs (yep, real ones!).

This town’s packed with 1700s charm and you can stroll past stone buildings, tour the Fort Bedford Museum, or visit the super fancy Bedford Springs Resort where presidents once kicked back.

Downtown’s full of cool shops, a giant Coffee Pot landmark, and is close to several historic covered bridges in Bedford County.

8. Tyrone

Tyrone, Pennsylvania

Cruising into Tyrone, you’ll be entering a town once marked by the towering smokestack of its historic paper mill, which operated for over a century.

You might also be able to catch a whiff of chocolate from Gardners Candies, a beloved chocolate company that’s been sweetening up the town since 1897.

This place has an old-school industrial feel, plus a super cute downtown with local eats, and a handful of murals that add character.

If you’ve got time, swing up to Reservoir Park for epic views of the valley or hit the trails at nearby Canoe Creek for a peaceful nature break.

9. Philipsburg

Philipsburg, Pennsylvania

The last stop is Philipsburg, a cozy little town with coal country roots.

It’s home to the John Henry Simler House which is actually one of the town’s oldest structures, built in 1807!

It also features a delightful downtown full of historic storefronts, and a restored historic theater called the Rowland Theatre that still shows movies.

Grab a bite at a retro diner, chat with super friendly locals, and soak up the slower pace as Philipsburg is the kind of place that makes you want to stay just a little longer.
