History
The Raven Lounge has been part of Detroit’s blues scene since 1966 and remains one of the city’s longest-running blues clubs.
Long before it opened, the building was home to Mazur’s Bar, a Polish neighborhood tavern known for live polka music.
At the time, the east side was changing quickly as immigrant communities and African American families drawn by auto industry jobs settled in the area.
That cultural shift helped nearby Black Bottom and Paradise Valley grow into thriving jazz and blues districts.
And when Sam Watts opened The Raven nearby, the club quickly became part of that musical tradition as a go-to spot for late-night music and soul food.
After Sam passed away in 1983, his wife Myrtle continued running it until longtime regular Tommy Stephens took over in the mid-1990s.
Stephens and his wife, Theresa, still manage The Raven today, helping preserve the old-school atmosphere that made the club famous in the first place.
