This Historic North Carolina Bridge Was Transformed Into a Beautiful Flower Garden

Most old highway bridges have a pretty predictable future once cars stop using them, but this one got a much more colorful second life.

What was once an ordinary crossing became something completely unexpected, thanks to a community that saw more than an old piece of road.

Today, its story is still unfolding, with colorful spaces and creative touches giving you plenty to discover along the way.

If you love unusual roadside stops with a great story behind them, youโ€™ll want to see what happened to this nearly century-old bridge.

Where Is It?

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is in the town of Lake Lure in Rutherford County.

Youโ€™ll find it at 3070 Memorial Highway along U.S. Highway 64, just 3 minutes from Chimney Rock Village and about 5 minutes from Chimney Rock State Park.

Itโ€™s also about a 50-minute drive from Asheville, 1 hour and 45 minutes from Charlotte, and roughly 70 minutes from Greenville, South Carolina.

About

Google Maps

The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge turned a retired 1925 highway bridge into one of the most unusual gardens in western North Carolina.

The historic Rocky Broad River Bridge once carried U.S. Highway 64 and other local routes across the river between Lake Lure and Chimney Rock village.

When a replacement bridge opened in 2011, the historic three-arch span was preserved through local efforts and transformed into a public garden.

The attraction officially opened in 2013, giving the century-old structure a completely new purpose.

It grew into a colorful collection of 30 themed gardens before Hurricane Helene devastated the site and severely damaged the bridge in 2024.

Despite that, volunteers are bringing the gardens back to life, and today, you can once again explore newly rebuilt areas on both sides of the river.

Each section has its own theme, and depending on when you visit, you might see spring tulips and daffodils, colorful summer blooms, or fall decorations.

At the Butterfly Haven Garden, you can watch butterflies gather around pollinator-friendly plants and spot a special butterfly display made from hens and sedum.

The Woodland Fairy Garden adds even more whimsy, with tiny fairies, gnomes, colorful plants, and fun surprises.

Another highlight is A Swing With a View Garden, where you can settle into a restored swing, admire the climbing roses, and enjoy views of Chimney Rock.

Along the way, keep an eye out for creative details tucked between the plants, including garden art, painted objects, sculptures, and birdhouses.

That makes this a fun place to wander slowly, since some of the coolest details are easy to miss if you walk too fast.

Youโ€™ll also have plenty of chances to spot local wildlife, from native bees buzzing around the flowers to bluebirds, ducks, and frogs.
