The Ultimate Keweenaw Peninsula Waterfalls Road Trip

If you love chasing waterfalls, the Keweenaw Peninsula is about to blow your mind.

This stretch of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula packs in roaring cascades, quiet forest drops, and roadside falls you can reach in just a few steps, all within a few hours of driving.

You’ll cut through dense woods and stumble on waterfalls that range from wide and thundering to hidden and tucked deep in the trees.

Some stops take a bit of exploring, others are practically right off the road, but every single one brings something different, and by the end, you’ll be wondering how this place isn’t on everyone’s radar.

Let’s get into it.

1. Canyon Falls

Canyon Falls is located right off US-41 about 15 minutes from L’Anse, making it one of the easiest waterfall stops on the Keweenaw Peninsula drive.

The falls sit on the Sturgeon River and drop about 15 feet through a narrow rock gorge, creating a rushing flow that looks especially powerful after heavy rain.

A short trail (about 0.8 miles round trip) leads you down into the canyon, where you can get close to the water, explore along the river, and spot smooth rock formations shaped by years of fast-moving currents.

This spot is known for its dramatic setting and super easy access, plus you’ll find picnic tables, restrooms, and even a small roadside park area, so it’s a perfect quick stop.

2. Bond Falls

Next up, Bond Falls cranks up the drama with a wide, thundering cascade on the Middle Branch of the Ontonagon River.

This waterfall drops around 50 feet in a series of powerful steps that stretch nearly 100 feet across, sending sheets of water crashing over dark rock ledges in a way that’s loud, misty, and impossible to ignore.

A fully accessible boardwalk trail, which is less than 0.5 miles long, leads you to multiple viewing platforms, including spots right at the base where you can feel the spray and watch the water surge past just a few feet away.

Bond Falls is famous for its easy access and massive flow, especially in spring and after storms, and it’s part of Bond Falls Scenic Site where you’ll find parking and restrooms.

3. O Kun de Kun Falls

It’s time to switch things up at O Kun de Kun Falls, located along the Baltimore River about 10 minutes from Bruce Crossing in Ontonagon County.

This is a 25-foot waterfall where the river drops in a single powerful plunge over a wide rock ledge before continuing downstream through thick forest.

You’ll follow the North Country Trail for about 1.4 miles from the parking area, a mostly flat stroll that leads you toward the falls, crossing a suspension bridge along the way.

O Kun de Kun stands out for its size and peaceful setting, plus you can explore nearby trails or visit the smaller Upper Falls just upstream.

4. Hungarian Falls

Next up, Hungarian Falls brings a totally different vibe with a three-part waterfall system hidden in the woods just outside Hubbell near Torch Lake.

The main attraction is the Lower Falls, where the Dover Creek drops about 50 feet over a wide rock wall, but if you explore a bit more you can also find the Middle Falls at roughly 20 feet and the Upper Falls tucked farther upstream.

Getting here is a bit more of an adventure, with a short but uneven trail depending on which section you visit, and you’ll be walking through forest paths, small clearings, and rocky terrain that feels way less developed than the previous stops.

5. Eagle River Falls

As you head farther north, Eagle River Falls delivers a quick but unforgettable stop right in the tiny town of Eagle River along M-26.

The falls drop about 25 feet over a rocky ledge on the Eagle River before flowing straight under a historic stone bridge and out into Lake Superior just a few hundred feet away.

You can pull over, walk a few steps to the viewing platform, and even climb down a short path for a closer look, making this one of the easiest waterfalls to see on the entire trip.

Eagle River Falls is known for its picture-perfect setting, plus it’s right next to Fitzgerald’s Restaurant, a great place to grab whitefish or pie after checking out the view.

6. Jacob’s Falls

Just a few minutes down the road, Jacob’s Falls keeps things small but seriously eye-catching right along M-26 between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor.

This roadside waterfall drops about 20 to 40 feet down a narrow rock channel on the Jampot River, creating a steady ribbon of water that’s especially strong after rain.

You can park right next to the falls and walk just a few steps to the base, where you’re close enough to hear every splash and feel the cool mist without any hiking at all.

Jacob’s Falls is best known for its super easy access and its location next to the famous Jampot bakery, so you can pair a quick waterfall stop with fresh jam, pastries, and baked goods made by the monks who run it.

7. Silver River Falls

As you continue hugging the Lake Superior shoreline, Silver River Falls adds a quick scenic stop right off M-26 near the tiny community of Silver River.

This waterfall drops about 15 to 25 feet in a compact, steady cascade as the Silver River flows under a roadside bridge and heads straight toward Lake Superior just a short distance away.

You can pull into a small turnout and walk only a few steps to view the falls from above, or carefully make your way down closer to the base for a better look at the water moving through the rocky channel.

8. Manganese Falls

Then it’s time to take a short detour to Manganese Falls, located just outside Copper Harbor along Manganese Road at the very northern tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

This waterfall drops about 30 feet along French Annie Creek, with water sliding over dark stone in a thinner, more delicate flow compared to the bigger falls earlier on the trip.

A quick walk from the small roadside parking area brings you close to the falls, where you can take in the layered rock textures up close.

Manganese Falls is known for being one of the northernmost waterfalls in Michigan and pairs perfectly with nearby spots like Hunter’s Point Park or a drive up Brockway Mountain.
