It’s about 2 hours from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and 1.5 hours from Frederick, making it an easy stop if you’re craving sweeping Appalachian views.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is one of Maryland’s most memorable train experiences, offering a chance to ride through the Allegheny Mountains.
The railroad follows part of the historic Western Maryland Railway, which once carried coal and passengers through the Appalachian region.
That historic route now takes you between Cumberland and Frostburg, a roughly 16-mile journey each way filled with picture-perfect landscapes.
Along the way, you’ll cross an iron truss bridge, pass through the 914-foot Brush Tunnel, and take in views of forests, valleys, rocky hillsides, and open countryside.
One of the highlights of the trip is Helmstetter’s Curve, a famous horseshoe-shaped bend where you can often see both ends of the train at the same time.
For that reason, it has become one of the railroad’s most photographed locations.
After winding through the mountains, you’ll arrive in Frostburg, a town situated about 2,000 feet above sea level.
It is lined with local restaurants, shops, and cafes, making it a great place to stretch your legs and relax before the return trip.
Adding to the experience, you may ride behind a historic diesel locomotive or the famous steam locomotive, No. 1309, depending on the day and excursion you choose.
Dating back to 1949, No. 1309 is one of the largest operating steam locomotives in the U.S.

- Allegheny Mountain Dinner Train: A dinner train featuring freshly prepared onboard meals, operating on select Saturday evenings from January through November.
- Allegheny Winter Express: A winter train ride through the mountains, operating from January through April.
- The Polar Express Train Ride: A holiday-themed experience that runs during the Christmas season and features storybook characters, hot cocoa, and a visit from Santa.
Best Time to Visit
Fall is widely considered the best time to visit.
From late September through October, the mountains along the route are covered in colorful foliage, turning the ride into one of Maryland’s top autumn experiences.
If seeing the steam locomotive No. 1309 is high on your wish list, pay close attention to the schedule when booking.
Steam-powered excursions are only offered on weekends and often sell out faster than standard diesel-powered trips.
Ticket Prices and Reservations
Ticket prices vary depending on the excursion and seating class you choose.
- Coach Class: $45 for adults and $40 for children ages 12 and under.
- Dome Class: $130 for adults and $125 for children ages 12 and under.
- Lounge Class: $95 and is available exclusively to guests ages 21 and older.
Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during the fall foliage season, holiday events, and weekends.
Planning Your Visit
Plan to arrive at Cumberland Station at least 30 to 45 minutes before departure.
This gives you time to pick up tickets, find your boarding area, take photos of the locomotive, and explore the station before the train leaves.
The round-trip journey to Frostburg takes about four and a half hours, including a layover in town, so wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore during your stop.
