This road trip guides you to the best spots in Allegheny National Forest that you cannot miss.
You’ll drive through thick forests, hike to secret waterfalls, stand on stunning overlooks, and even visit a place where you can see giant lighters and knives.
By the end of this post, your friends are going to be wondering how you know of these hidden gems.
1. Rimrock Overlook
Rimrock Overlook, located off Forest Road 454, gives you a jaw-dropping view over the 12,000-acre Kinzua Bay and the Allegheny Reservoir.
You’ll walk a short 0.2-mile trail before going down a stone staircase to a platform perched high above the water.
The overlook is famous for its giant boulders, sweeping fall foliage, and the chance to spot bald eagles soaring overhead if you’re lucky.
2. Jakes Rocks Overlook and Mountain Bike Trail
Just a few miles away, Jakes Rocks Overlook offers a wide-open view of the Allegheny Reservoir, with forested hills stretching into the distance.
But the real star here is the Jakes Rocks Mountain Bike Trail System, with 30+ miles of singletrack twisting through the woods like a rollercoaster for your bike.
The trails range from smooth, flowy sections perfect for beginners to tight switchbacks and rocky drops that’ll get your heart pumping.
3. Kinzua Dam
Next up is Kinzua Dam, a massive concrete wall spanning 1,897 feet across the Allegheny River and holding back the Allegheny Reservoir.
Built in 1965 for flood control and hydroelectric power, this dam creates calm lake views and draws visitors for fishing and boating.
There’s even the chance to spot bald eagles here (particularly during winter).
You can walk right up to the viewing area, feel the rumble of water rushing through the spillway, and learn cool facts from the signs all around.
4. Hearts Content Recreation Site
Next up is Hearts Content Recreation Site, a place that feels like entering a peaceful green cathedral.
Some of its ancient old-growth white pines rise over 140 feet tall and have stood for more than 300 years!
You can wander the easy 1.1-mile Interpretive Trail, where soft ferns cover the forest floor and towering trees stretch skyward like skyscrapers.
There’s also a picnic area and a campground if you want to kick back and take in the fresh pine-scented air a little longer.
5. Minister Creek Trail
Once you’re ready to lace up your hiking boots again, the Minister Creek Trail is the perfect spot to hit the dirt.
This 6.6-mile loop winds through the forest with enormous rock formations, mossy boulders, and plenty of stream crossings.
Along the way, you’ll find hidden backcountry campsites, potentially spot deer moving through the trees, and maybe even hear woodpeckers tapping in the distance.
6. Hector Falls
Leaving Minister Creek behind, it’s time to swing by Hector Falls, which is probably one of the prettiest hidden gems in the forest.
The waterfall tumbles about 22 feet down layered rock ledges, creating a stair-step cascade that looks even better after a good rain.
It’s a short 2-mile out-and-back hike to the falls, where the peaceful setting feels worlds away from everything else.
7. Kinzua Bridge State Park & Skywalk
Before wrapping up your trip, head to Kinzua Bridge State Park, once home to the world’s longest and tallest railroad bridge.
When a tornado damaged a part of the structure in 2003, they turned the remaining 600 feet into the Kinzua Skywalk.
A glass floor at its far end lets you look down 225 feet to the valley below!
There’s also a short 1.15-mile General Kane Trail and a visitor center loaded with exhibits showing how this engineering marvel was built and destroyed.
(At the time of writing, the Skywalk only opens for the fall foliage season as it undergoes a multi-year preservation project. It normally opens from August to October, but it’s best to check online before planning your visit.)
8. Zippo / Case Museum & Flagship Store
For something a bit different and unexpected, visit the Zippo / Case Museum & Flagship Store in Bradford.
This is where iconic Zippo lighters and handcrafted Case knives take center stage.
Inside, you can browse rare vintage lighters and see the famous Zippo repair clinic, where you can watch broken lighters getting fixed for life by master technicians.
Don’t forget to snap a photo with the giant 40-foot Zippo lighter and Case knife statues out front!
