Think sandy beaches, breezy hikes, cool little towns, and secret spots only the locals know about.
You’ll find places to swim, spots to snack, trails to wander, and views that’ll have you pulling over for a photo every five minutes.

Nature walks, boat rides, or beach sunsets…
Whatever you’re into, this trip’s got you covered, and we’re pretty sure there’s at least one place on this list that you’ve never heard of.
1. Erie Bluffs State Park

Erie Bluffs State Park is right along the Lake Erie shoreline in western Pennsylvania, just about 12 miles west of Erie.
Here you’ll find the tallest natural bluffs on the lake, with some rising over 90 feet!
This park’s a total gem if you like nature, with 587 acres of forests, wildflower meadows, and trails.
If you’re lucky you might even spot bald eagles, deer, or even foxes if you’re lucky.
It doesn’t have swimming or big crowds, but that’s part of the charm—it’s perfect for quiet hikes, awesome lake views, and feeling like you’ve got the place all to yourself.
2. Asbury Woods

Just a short drive from Erie Bluffs, Asbury Woods brings a totally different kind of feel.
It has 200 acres of wetlands, old-growth forests, and super scenic boardwalk trails.
You can explore more than 5 miles of easy walking paths, peek into the Nature Center with live animals and hands-on exhibits.
Or if you’re around at the right time, then join one of their fun seasonal events like maple syrup tapping in spring.
It’s family-friendly, full of wildlife, and the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down, breathe in the piney air, and maybe even hug a tree (no judgment here).
3. Presque Isle State Park

Next up is the superstar of the Pennsylvania lakeshore, Presque Isle State Park.
It’s a sandy, sun-soaked peninsula that juts right into Lake Erie.
This place is packed with 13 swimmable beaches, a bunch of bike and hiking trails, and even a lighthouse you can climb for amazing views (yep, it’s totally Instagram-worthy).
Whether you’re kayaking through lagoons, birdwatching near the marshes, or just digging your toes in the sand, Presque Isle is all about that classic summer vacation feeling.
Please note that the Presque Isle Lighthouse offers tours from May to October, so be sure to check their website for current hours before you visit!
4. Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park
Just when you think Erie’s out of surprises, the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park pops up with a peaceful, tree-filled escape right in the middle of the city.
It’s got over 200 different types of trees, a winding creek, cute stone footbridges, and hillside slides that are basically made for letting your inner kid loose.
This spot’s all about slowing down, and it’s perfect for a picnic, a quiet stroll, or snapping pics of the leaves if you’re rolling through in fall.
5. Erie Bayfront District
From leafy trails to lakefront buzz, the Erie Bayfront District brings all the energy with boardwalks, boats, and waterfront dining
You can walk right along the bay, grab fish tacos at a waterside restaurant, or hop on a sightseeing boat cruise for a totally different look at the shoreline.
There’s also the Bicentennial Tower if you’re into epic panoramas—take the elevator up and you’ll see clear across the lake on a sunny day.
6. Erie Maritime Museum
Right along the Bayfront, the Erie Maritime Museum is where history fans (and anyone who likes cool old ships) should absolutely stop.
The star here is the U.S. Brig Niagara, a full-size sailing warship you can tour that once battled the British in the War of 1812!
Inside the museum, there are hands-on exhibits, dramatic ship models, and even educational films that make you feel like you’re right in the middle of a naval battle.
Please note that the Erie Maritime Museum’s opening hours vary throughout the year, so check online before planning your visit.
7. Shades Beach Park
If you’re craving another dose of lake time, head east to Shades Beach Park—it’s low-key, local, and totally relaxing.
There’s a quiet beach with two picnic shelters perfect for lunch with a view, and a big open field if you feel like tossing a frisbee or just stretching out in the sun.
It’s a chill way to wind down your Lake Erie road trip, away from the crowds but still soaking up that sweet lakeside peace.
8. Shorewood Beach

Just a few minutes down the road, Shorewood Beach is another one of those secret spots locals love.
It’s small, quiet, and tucked away in the Harborcreek Township neighborhood.
There are no big signs or fancy facilities, just a narrow path leading to a peaceful stretch of sand and smooth stones.
Here you can catch an awesome sunset with barely anyone around.
It’s the kind of place where you bring a blanket, some snacks, and let the sound of the waves do all the talking.
9. Penn Shore Winery and Vineyards
After all that lake-hopping, it’s time to switch gears and sip something sweet at Penn Shore Winery and Vineyards.
It was established in 1968, making it one of the oldest wineries in the Lake Erie region and all of Pennsylvania!
This spot’s got cozy tasting rooms, rows of grapevines that stretch toward the lake, and live music on the lawn during summer weekends that makes you want to stay awhile.
Try their Concord or Niagara wines (they’re classic Lake Erie flavors), grab a bottle to go, and toast to a road trip well done.
10. Fishermans Beach

For one final stop, swing by Fishermans Beach.
It’s a tiny, hidden gem where the shoreline feels raw, quiet, and totally unfiltered.
You’ll find it where Twentymile Creek meets Lake Erie.
There are no crowds, no fuss, just a gravel path leading to a rocky beach where anglers cast lines and the sunsets stretch on forever.
It’s the perfect last stop to snap one more photo and soak in the peaceful vibes of Lake Erie before you head home.
