The building that now houses Grand Trunk Pub has a history dating back to the late 1800s, when it was owned by the Traub Brothers jewelers.
The brothers became well known for popularizing the “orange blossom” engagement ring before eventually selling the property to the Grand Trunk Railway.
By the early 1900s, the railway wanted a stronger presence in downtown Detroit and purchased the building to create a formal ticket station.
During the renovation, the building’s second floor was removed to make room for the large vaulted ceiling and brass chandeliers that still define the space today.
The station officially opened in 1905 and operated until 1935, serving travelers moving between the United States and Canada during Detroit’s railroad boom.
As Detroit’s automobile industry grew, passenger rail travel steadily declined, and Grand Trunk eventually shifted its focus away from passenger service.
After the railway left the building in 1935, the nearby Metropole Hotel purchased the property and turned the former ticket station into a bar and kitchen.
The building remained a bar for decades before the current owners purchased it in 2006.
They restored much of its railroad identity while transforming it into the modern Grand Trunk Pub you see today.
