How to Spend a Weekend in Athens, Georgia

If you think Athens, Georgia is just a college town, think again because this place is full of surprises.

One minute you’re walking past street art and live music, and the next you’re hanging out with bears (yep, real ones) or wandering through a garden that feels like a jungle.

There’s great food, chill parks, fun museums, and a few totally weird landmarks that make the perfect photo op.

Whether you’re into nature, art, animals, or just really good tacos, this little city packs a whole lot of fun into one weekend so let’s map out your perfect Athens adventure.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia sits just 15 minutes south of downtown Athens and covers 323 acres of gardens, trails, and greenhouses.

It’s known for its super colorful flower displays, including the Heritage Garden with old-school Southern plants and the International Garden that takes you on a plant tour around the world.

You can walk five miles of shady nature trails, explore a tropical conservatory filled with orchids and other exotic plants, or chill by the Middle Oconee River.

Don’t miss the Garden Gift Shop or the fun family scavenger hunts they sometimes run in the Children’s Garden, perfect for a little extra adventure.

2. Bear Hollow Zoo

Just a few minutes away inside Memorial Park, Bear Hollow Zoo is the perfect low-key stop if you’re into cool animals with even cooler backstories.

This small zoo is home to native Georgia wildlife like black bears, red fox, owls, and even an alligator, all of which can’t survive in the wild and live here as animal ambassadors.

It’s totally free to visit, and you can stroll the shady paths while learning fun facts at each habitat (like how an owl can rotate its head almost all the way around).

On weekends, the Exhibit Hall opens up with hands-on displays and live animal encounters that kids go nuts for.

3. Georgia Museum of Art

Right on the University of Georgia campus, the Georgia Museum of Art is the place to go if you love art.

It’s totally free to visit and packed with nearly 20,000 pieces, from American paintings and Italian Renaissance art to modern sculpture and contemporary stuff.

They’ve got rotating exhibits that change all the time, plus fun extras like film nights, yoga in the galleries, and even art-themed scavenger hunts.

If you need a chill break from the outdoors (or just want some solid AC), this spot is a quiet, creative space that still keeps things fun and fresh.

4. Cali N Tito’s

After all that exploring, you’re definitely going to be hungry and Cali N Tito’s is the spot you don’t want to miss.

This cool, open-air Latin American restaurant feels more like a beach shack than a college town eatery, with picnic tables, colorful décor, and a laid-back tropical vibe.

The menu is full of favorites like Cuban sandwiches, fish tacos, maduros (sweet plantains), and massive plates of arroz chaufa that’ll leave you stuffed and happy.

The menu does change from time to time but you can’t go wrong with one of their fresh fruit smoothies.

5. Tree That Owns Itself

Okay, now for something totally weird, Athens is home to a famous tree said to ‘legally’ own itself.

Yep, the Tree That Owns Itself sits at the corner of Finley and Dearing Streets, and according to legend, it was deeded its own land by a guy who loved it so much he didn’t want it ever cut down.

The original white oak fell in 1942, but locals planted a new one from its acorn, and that “son of the tree” still stands proudly with its tiny fence and official plaque.

It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s the kind of only-in-Athens spot that makes a perfect stop for a quick photo and a fun story to tell later.

6. Downtown Athens

Just a short walk from the tree, Downtown Athens is where the city really shows off its personality.

You’ve got blocks packed with indie shops, record stores, vintage clothing spots, and cozy cafés that make it way too easy to spend an entire afternoon wandering.

The music scene here is legendary, as this is the hometown of R.E.M. and the B-52s, so don’t be surprised if you stumble into a live show at the iconic 40 Watt Club or Georgia Theatre.

Whether you’re grabbing coffee at Walker’s, searching for vinyl at Wuxtry Records, or munching late-night fries at The Grill, downtown totally brings the charm.

7. Sandy Creek Park

When you’re ready to swap city streets for some fresh air, Sandy Creek Park is just 10 minutes north of downtown and totally worth the drive.

It wraps around the 260-acre Lake Chapman, so you can swim at the beach, rent a kayak, or just float around and soak up the sun.

There’s also over 14 miles of trails if you’re feeling like a nature walk, plus a big dog park where your pup can go full zoomies.

Pack a picnic, bring a towel, and plan to stay a while as this place is chill, breezy, and a perfect outdoor reset after a busy day in town.
