1. Truckee River Legacy Trail
Truckee River Legacy Trail is a paved multi-use path that follows the Truckee River, connecting downtown Truckee with the Glenshire neighborhood.
Stretching about 9.6 miles round trip, the trail includes interpretive signs, picnic areas, benches, and bridges that offer views of the river and the surrounding landscape.
You can walk, run, bike, or fish along the route, and the mostly gentle grade makes it a favorite for families, casual cyclists, and longer adventures.
While exploring, keep an eye out for bald eagles, ospreys, and other local wildlife, as this is also a great spot for birdwatching.
2. Truckee River Winery
A quick 10-minute drive from the trail brings you to Truckee River Winery, a family-owned spot focused on small-batch wines that reflect the character of the surrounding mountain landscape.

One of the best things to do here is walk the 0.7-mile Nature Trail, where you’ll follow a stream, spot native plants, and pass the site where the Murphy Cabin once stood.
You can also head out on the 3.7-mile Donner Summit Canyon Trail for a scenic overlook of Donner Lake and views of the rugged granite cliffs.

6. Donner Lake
At the edges of the state park you have Donner Lake itself, a beautiful alpine lake that stretches about 2.7 miles long and sits at 5,935 feet above sea level.
Known for its crystal-clear water and mountain views, it’s one of the best places around Truckee for boating, water skiing, windsurfing, and fishing.
If you’re in the mood for a bike ride, follow the 7-mile Donner Lake Bike Loop, which winds around the shoreline and passes through some photo-worthy stretches.

7. West End Beach
After your ride around Donner Lake, make a stop at West End Beach, a popular public beach and a favorite spot for families during the summer.
Located on the lake’s western shore, this 12-acre recreation area features a sandy beach, picnic tables, kayak rentals, volleyball courts, and plenty of grassy space to relax.
Once you settle in, cool off in the calm, clear water and take in the mountain views all around.

8. Donner Lake Overlook
For a memorable finish to the day, drive 5 minutes to Donner Lake Overlook, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in town.
From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Donner Lake, the surrounding mountains, and the dense forests that blanket the region.
It’s also a great place to reflect on the area’s history, as the site is linked to the Donner Party’s journey during the winter of 1846 and 1847.
