The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is located in downtown Bryson City, one of the main gateway towns to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
You’ll find the historic depot at 45 Mitchell Street, about a 70-minute drive from Asheville, 1.5 hours from Hendersonville, and around 3 hours from Charlotte.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is one of the state’s most popular scenic train rides, winding through western North Carolina’s stunning mountain scenery.
The railroad departs from the historic Bryson City Depot, which first opened in 1895 and now welcomes thousands of passengers every year.
From there, the route covers about 53 miles through the Great Smoky Mountains region, including areas that are only accessible by train.
Depending on what you’d like to see, you can choose from two primary scenic excursions.
The Nantahala Gorge Excursion is the most popular route, taking you on a 4.5-hour, 44-mile round trip alongside Alarka Creek, Fontana Lake, and the Nantahala River.
One of the biggest highlights is crossing the famous Fontana Trestle before entering the beautiful Nantahala Gorge, so be sure to have your camera ready.
You’ll then stop at the Nantahala Outdoor Center for a one-hour layover to stretch your legs, grab a bite, or explore the area.
If charming small towns and peaceful countryside are more your style, the Tuckasegee River Excursion is the perfect choice.
This 4-hour, 32-mile round trip follows the Tuckasegee River, travels through the 836-foot Cowee Tunnel, and passes the famous filming location from The Fugitive.
The layover is in the historic town of Dillsboro, where you’ll have 80 minutes to browse local shops, sample barbecue, or enjoy a craft beer before heading back.
No matter which journey you choose, you’ll be treated to stunning scenery that changes throughout the year.
Spring brings blooming wildflowers and fresh green forests, while summer offers lush mountain landscapes and long daylight hours.
Fall is easily the busiest season, when brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow blanket the mountains during North Carolina’s famous leaf season.
By winter, things become quieter, with bare ridges and special holiday-themed rides.
From November through January, the railroad comes alive with the Polar Express Train Ride, a magical holiday adventure inspired by the classic children’s story.
During the 1.25-hour round trip, you’ll enjoy hot chocolate and desserts, meet Santa at the North Pole, and take home a silver sleigh bell.

The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad operates year-round from Bryson City, with scenic excursions departing on select days each week.
The Nantahala Gorge and Tuckasegee River excursions usually leave around 10:30 a.m., but check the calendar for the most up-to-date departure times.
For something different, you can also choose from seasonal events throughout the year, including:

Ticket Prices
Ticket prices vary by excursion, seating class, and travel date.
Adult tickets range from $63.72 to $86.40 for Coach Class, $74.52 to $97.20 for Coach Plus, and $93.96 to $116.64 for Crown Class.
First Class and Premium seating cost well over $100 per person, while children’s tickets are available at reduced prices for most excursions.
Food and Amenities
Food options vary by seating class.
First Class and Premium Open Air Gondola tickets include a meal, while lunch is available for purchase in the other cars.
