The Horse You Came In On Saloon traces its roots back to 1775, making it older than the United States itself.
Back then, Fell’s Point was one of the busiest port neighborhoods in the American colonies, filled with sailors, shipbuilders, merchants, and waterfront taverns.
Originally built as The Fountain Inn, the bar became a popular watering hole for travelers and locals passing through the busy area.
It even operated under different tavern names for centuries before owner Howard Gerber bought it in 1972 after a lucky win at Pimlico Race Course.
That win is what actually inspired him to rename the bar The Horse You Came In On Saloon.
According to local stories, Gerber even had a friend dressed as a cowboy ride a horse into the bar on its opening day.
And like much of Fell’s Point, the saloon survived major moments in American history, including the War of 1812, Prohibition, and economic downturns.
