And when Prohibition hit in 1920, that shift fully took hold, with beer replaced by their iconic homemade root beer, brewed with cane sugar and served ice cold.
The restaurant then moved to its current Commerce Street location in 1942, where it still operates today as the city’s oldest restaurant.
Over the years, it passed from the Schilo family to the Lyons family in 1980 while staying true to its German deli roots as downtown grew around it.
