1. Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte, North Carolina’s largest city, is an action-packed starting point for your trip to Niagara Falls, offering plenty to experience before you head north.
Known as the Queen City, it is home to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, where you can test racing simulators, see historic cars, and learn about legendary drivers.
You can also ride roller coasters at Carowinds, explore hands-on exhibits at Discovery Place Science, or catch the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.
Before leaving, visit the U.S. National Whitewater Center, a 1,300-acre outdoor site offering whitewater rafting, ziplining, climbing, mountain biking, and more.
2. Blowing Rock, North Carolina
From Charlotte, drive about an hour and 45 minutes to Blowing Rock, a small North Carolina mountain town set roughly 3,600 feet above sea level.
Stop at The Blowing Rock first, an iconic cliff where unusual wind currents can send light objects upward and offer huge views across Johns River Gorge.
You can then head downtown and stroll Main Street, popping into Take Heart for clothing, jewelry, and gifts, or ArtWalk for locally inspired art and unique finds.

3. Roanoke, Virginia
After exploring Blowing Rock, drive a little over three hours to Roanoke, Virginia, a lively city surrounded by the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains.
Once you arrive, head up Mill Mountain to see the 88.5-foot-tall Roanoke Star, a 1949 landmark glowing with about 2,000 feet of neon tubing above the city.
Downtown, explore the Virginia Museum of Transportation, where the collection includes massive steam locomotives such as the Norfolk & Western J Class 611.
You can also browse the Historic Roanoke City Market, operating since 1882, for fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, local meats and cheeses, and flowers.
4. New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia
Leaving Roanoke behind, drive 2 hours and 20 minutes to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, where 70,000 acres stretch along the New River.
The highlight here is the New River Gorge Bridge, a 3,030-foot-long steel arch soaring 876 feet above the river and one of the highest bridges in the U.S.
For an unforgettable hike, follow the 3.1-mile round-trip Long Point Trail to a rocky overlook with a postcard-worthy view of the bridge and gorge.

5. Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania
About three hours from New River Gorge is Ohiopyle State Park, a 20,500-acre park where the Youghiogheny River winds through the scenic Laurel Highlands.
Your first stop can be the 20-foot Ohiopyle Falls, followed by a walk along the Ferncliff Peninsula to see wildflowers, ancient ferns, and 200-year-old hemlocks.
Another photo-worthy stop is the 2.9-mile Meadow Run Trail, which follows the stream past more waterfalls, rock formations, and beautiful forest scenery.
If you want more action, go rafting on the Lower Youghiogheny’s Class III and IV rapids or bike part of the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage through the woods.
6. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Now continue for 75 minutes to Pittsburgh, famous for its three rivers, the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio, which meet right in the heart of downtown.
To get a great view of it all, ride the historic Duquesne Incline up Mount Washington in its iconic red cable cars, then head to the observation deck.
