The Perfect Jim Thorpe Day Out Guide

Planning a day trip to Jim Thorpe? You’re in for a good one—this town may be small, but it packs in way more fun than you’d expect.

We’re talking lake hangs, spooky history, magical coffee, mountain views, and a whole lot of surprises you’d never guess are hiding in this little Pennsylvania town.

Whether it’s your first or tenth visit, this guide has everything you need to make your day awesome.

Keep reading—we’ve got cool spots, fun stories, and the kind of places that’ll make you want to come back tomorrow.

1. Mauch Chunk Lake Park

Mauch Chunk Lake Park, only 10 minutes from downtown, has a sandy beach, kayak-friendly water, and a snack stand that serves treats in the summer.

It’s the go-to spot for swimming, fishing, and hiking, with trails like the Switchback Trail offering shady forest views and lovely photo ops.

Locals love it for laid-back, lazy lake days and picnic lunches.

Fun fact: This whole lake is man-made, built in the ’70s to stop flooding in the town below (and now it’s just the best chill-out spot around).

2. Old Jail Museum

Once you’ve soaked up the sun at the lake, head back into town for the Old Jail Museum—a spooky stone fortress that looks straight out of a movie.

Built in 1871, this place held real-life prisoners (including the famous Molly Maguires), and you can still see the mysterious handprint left on the wall.

The tour takes you through cold, echoey cells, creepy solitary confinement rooms, and even the old gallows—yep, it’s weirdly fascinating and just a bit eerie.

3. Muggles’ Mug Coffee Shop

Shake off the jail chills with a magical pick-me-up at Muggles’ Mug Coffee Shop, a Harry Potter-themed café on Broadway perfect for bookworms.

This place goes all out—we’re talking Harry Potter decor, themed lattes, butterbeer (yes, it’s on the menu), and tons of fun photo spots.

Whether you’re a die-hard Gryffindor or just in it for the cozy vibes and tasty espresso, this quirky little spot brings big personality.

4. Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Once you’ve recharged, it’s time to hop on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway—a vintage train that feels like a ride through history.

The ride lasts about an hour and winds through the Lehigh Gorge, passing river rapids, old canal locks, and thick forests that turn wildly colorful in the fall.

You’ll sit in old-school passenger cars with big windows, making this the most relaxing (and Instagram-worthy) way to see Jim Thorpe’s epic scenery.

5. Asa Packer Mansion Museum

Right after your train ride, take a short walk up the hill to the Asa Packer Mansion Museum—a massive Victorian home that looks frozen in time.

Built in 1861 by railroad tycoon Asa Packer, this place still has its original furniture, gas lighting, and fancy wallpaper (cool, right?).

The guided tour is super detailed and full of juicy facts about the town’s past—plus, the front porch has an awesome view of the town, so don’t skip it.

(Asa Packer Mansion operates on a seasonal schedule. Open June–October (Wednesday–Monday), November, April, and May (weekends only), and December (first two weekends).

6. Penn’s Peak

If you’re up for ending your day with live music and mountain views, Penn’s Peak is the move.

It’s a concert venue on top of a hill with giant windows overlooking Pennsylvania’s Appalachian mountains.

They book everything from country to rock to tribute bands, and there’s a big dance floor if you feel like letting loose.

Even if there’s no show, you can grab dinner at the on-site restaurant and watch the sun dip behind the mountains.
