Where Is It?
Bancroft Tower is located in Worcester at the top of Prospect Hill in Salisbury Park.
The drive takes about an hour from Boston, roughly 50 minutes from Providence, Rhode Island, and about 70 minutes from Hartford, Connecticut.
About
Bancroft Tower is a stone tower that looks like it belongs in a medieval movie, but it has been watching over the city since 1900.
The tower was built by Stephen Salisbury III to honor George Bancroft, a Worcester native, historian, statesman, and former U.S. Secretary of the Navy.
It’s made from granite and stone, stands about 56 feet tall, and offers jaw-dropping panoramas of the surrounding landscape.
From the top, you can see rolling hills and neighborhoods stretching out in every direction on a clear day.
The design is intentionally castle-like, complete with thick stone walls, arched openings, and a rounded turret that you wouldn’t expect to see in Massachusetts.
When you visit, you can walk right up to the base of the tower and enjoy the park’s open green space, trails, and picnic spots.
Access to the interior is limited, but on select days each year, you can climb the stairs to the viewing level.
There is no long hike required, which makes this one of the easiest scenic spots to reach in central Massachusetts.

Admission & Hours
Bancroft Tower is free to visit, and you do not need a ticket or a reservation to check it out.
Salisbury Park is open daily from sunrise to 10 p.m. and during these hours, you can freely walk around the grounds and right up to the tower.
The viewing deck is only open seasonally, typically on Sundays in October, and hours can vary, so it’s smart to check the City of Worcester Parks website before you go.
Best Time to Visit
Fall is a favorite time to visit, when the surrounding trees turn bright orange and red and frame the tower beautifully.
Sunset is especially popular, as the sky lights up and the city slowly starts to glow, so arrive a bit early if you want photos without a crowd.

Free parking is available on-site, and it’s usually easy to find a spot.
