The Ultimate Cayuga Lake Road Trip Itinerary

Ready to roll the windows down and hit the road around one of the prettiest lakes in New York?

This Cayuga Lake road trip is packed with gorgeous waterfalls, chill small towns, and the kind of food that’ll make you wanna pull over every ten minutes.

Whether you’re into hiking, history, or just hanging out by the water with something tasty in hand, this itinerary’s got a little bit of everything.

1. Buttermilk Falls State Park

Buttermilk Falls State Park in Ithaca is named after the frothy, fast-moving waterfall that flows down a rocky gorge just minutes from downtown.

You can hike past more than ten waterfalls on the Gorge Trail and splash around in a natural swimming hole at the base of the main falls.

You might even spot fish and frogs in the shallow pools along the way.

There’s also a big grassy picnic area, a campground if you want to stay overnight, and plenty of shady spots to rest after all that hiking.

2. Ithaca Falls

Just a short 10-minute drive away, Ithaca Falls is where things go from peaceful to powerful in a very cool way.

This towering 150-foot waterfall crashes down a steep cliff at the edge of town, and you can reach its base without a hike.

It’s a favorite spot for fly fishers or just anyone who wants to feel tiny standing next to something seriously epic.

3. Cornell Botanic Gardens

If you’re craving something calm after all the waterfall action, the Cornell Botanic Gardens is the perfect place to relax and get lost in nature.

This huge garden and preserve stretches over 4,000 acres, with peaceful walking trails, colorful flower beds, and even a hidden herb garden.

Keep an eye out for turtles sunbathing near the ponds, and don’t miss the pretty stone bridge that looks like it belongs in a fairytale.

4. Aurora

Next is the tiny lakeside village of Aurora.

This place is packed with historic buildings, cozy cafés, and the Village Market—a welcoming stop for local goods and quick bites.

Grab a coffee, stroll by the water, and peek into the shops along Main Street.

And if you’re not ready to leave, the Inns of Aurora offers comfy stays, lakefront views, and total relaxation.

5. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

Switch things up with a visit to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge which is a quiet, nature-filled spot.

This massive wetland is a birdwatcher’s dream, with bald eagles, herons, and countless other birds soaring through (especially in spring and fall).

You can drive the wildlife loop, stretch your legs on the boardwalk trail, and bring binoculars to see some birds in action.

(The visitor center and Wildlife Drive are usually open from April through November, weather permitting.)

6. Seneca Falls

Your next stop is Seneca Falls, where history steps into the spotlight.

This historic town is the birthplace of the women’s suffrage movement.

You can see it firsthand at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park, where the first convention was held in 1848.

The cute downtown has canal views, statues of famous suffragists, and even a bridge that is said to have inspired the one in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life‘.

7. Buttonwood Grove Winery

Ready to toast to an unforgettable road trip?

Buttonwood Grove Winery is the ideal spot to kick back with a glass of Finger Lakes Riesling and soak up some dreamy lake views.

They’ve got outdoor seating, live music on weekends, and even friendly goats you can greet between sips.

8. Finger Lakes Cider House

If cider’s more your style, head to the nearby Finger Lakes Cider House for a taste of crisp, apple-filled goodness.

This farm-based cidery serves up creative small-batch drinks in a laid-back barn setting.

Grab a flight, munch on a local cheese board, and enjoy the views of Cayuga Lake and the rolling hills.

9. Taughannock Falls State Park

Just when you thought the waterfalls couldn’t get any better, Taughannock Falls shows up and steals the show.

This giant 215-foot waterfall (yep, taller than Niagara) plunges straight down, and the Gorge Trail gives you a front-row view with barely any uphill walking.

If you’re short on time, there’s a scenic overlook for a quick view.

You’ll also find a beach area by the lake where you can unwind or launch a kayak if you’re feeling adventurous.
