1. Lake Sabrina
Lake Sabrina is a high-elevation lake at 9,128 feet in the Eastern Sierra, about 19 miles from the city of Bishop.
It’s famous for its bright blue water, mountain views, and crazy good fall colors—especially in late September when the aspens go full gold.
You can kayak or rent a boat at Lake Sabrina Boat Landing, hike the scenic Sabrina Basin Trail, or relax with pie and coffee at the little café near the dock.
Fun fact: Lake Sabrina was created by a dam in 1907-8 for hydroelectric power, but today you can enjoy fishing, boating, and taking in the mountain views of the Sierra Nevada.
2. Convict Lake
Only 54 minutes from Lake Sabrina, Convict Lake offers a different kind of beauty that’s just as impressive.
This lake is well-known for its mirror-like water and the massive cliffs of Mount Morrison, which tower 12,241 feet above it.
Its name comes from an 1871 shootout between escaped convicts and a posse, giving it a strong dose of Old West history.
You can walk the 2.5-mile loop trail around the lake, rent a paddleboard, or cast a line for rainbow trout that love hanging out near the shore.
3. June Lake
Next up is June Lake, a dreamy little spot that feels like a mountain beach town complete with sand and all.
Spanning about 320 acres, the lake’s crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming, kayaking, or just floating around without stress.
This is actually the highlight of the June Lake Loop (also known as Highway 158), a short scenic drive that winds past four beautiful lakes.

4. Tenaya Lake
Then there’s Tenaya Lake, located high up in Yosemite National Park and surrounded by giant granite domes.

It’s smaller than June Lake, but the calm water and easy shoreline access make it ideal for picnics, paddleboarding, or a quick dip after hiking.
You’ll get the best views from the Sunrise Lakes Trail or by chilling near the east shore, where the granite slides right into the water like a natural slip ’n slide.
5. Mono Lake
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Mono Lake shows up and flips the script.
This lake is over 760,000 years old (seriously!) and famous for its weird, alien-looking tufa towers rising out of the water.
It’s about 65 square miles wide and too salty for fish, but it’s a hotspot for millions of brine shrimp and migrating birds.
Don’t miss the South Tufa Trail, where the views are unreal and your camera will catch some of the weirdest, coolest sights around.
6. Lake Tahoe
And finally, we have Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, covering a whopping 191 square miles.
This lake straddles the California–Nevada border and is famous for its insane clarity (you can see down 70 feet at times!) and vibrant blue-green color.
Here, you can paddleboard at Sand Harbor, hike to Eagle Lake, or hang out at Emerald Bay, where the tiny island in the middle looks like it belongs on a postcard.
In summer, it’s all about beaches and boat rides, while winter means snowy peaks and hot cocoa with a view.
