The Mile High Swinging Bridge is located on Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina.
It’s about a 40-minute drive from Boone, 1.5 hours from Asheville, 2 hours from Winston-Salem, 2.5 hours from Charlotte, and 3 hours and 40 minutes from Raleigh.
The bridge is inside Grandfather Mountain Nature Park, making it an easy stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway or while exploring western North Carolina.

The Mile High Swinging Bridge is one of North Carolina’s most famous attractions and gives you the chance to walk across America’s highest suspension footbridge.
It stretches 228 feet across a rocky chasm atop Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak, where you’ll be standing more than a mile above sea level.
The original structure was built in 1952 after Hugh Morton wanted his grandmother, who had limited mobility, to enjoy the summit views without making the difficult climb.
After construction began in Greensboro, the bridge was transported to Grandfather Mountain, where it took three weeks to assemble because of poor weather.
It was then rebuilt in 1999 using the original towers and upgraded with galvanized steel cables, side rails, and decking.
The modern steel grate walkway is designed to let wind, rain, and snow pass through while providing solid footing for visitors.
Today, as you walk across, you’ll feel the bridge gently sway beneath your feet, especially on breezy days.
The movement is completely normal and part of the experience, adding a little excitement as you make your way from one side to the other.
As for the views, they’re the real highlight, with sweeping mountain vistas in every direction on a clear day.

Grandfather Mountain is open every day of the year, weather permitting, except on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Hours vary throughout the year and are currently:
- Spring: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Summer: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- Late Summer: 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Fall: 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on select weekends and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on most weekdays.
- Winter: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Getting to the Bridge
One of the best things about visiting is that you don’t have to complete a long hike to enjoy the scenery.
Drive the winding two-mile scenic road to the summit parking area beside the Top Shop.
From there, you can climb the stairs next to the parking area, use the indoor stairs inside the Top Shop, or take the elevator to the third floor for a level walk to the bridge.
This makes it a great stop for families, older adults, and anyone who wants incredible mountain views without a strenuous climb.
Best Time to Visit
Every season offers something different, from spring wildflowers and comfortable summer weather to vibrant fall foliage and peaceful winter scenery.
Fall is also the busiest time of year, so expect larger crowds, especially on weekends from late September through October.
For the best visibility, arrive early in the morning before afternoon clouds and fog become more common.

Admission is required to visit the Mile High Swinging Bridge because it’s located inside Grandfather Mountain.

What to Bring
Wear comfortable shoes with good traction because the bridge’s steel grate deck and the rocks around Linville Peak can be slippery when wet.
Don’t forget your camera or phone because the bridge and surrounding overlooks offer some of the best mountain photography spots in North Carolina.
How Long to Spend
Plan to spend at least two hours if you want to cross the bridge, visit the wildlife habitats, stop at the nature discovery, and enjoy a few scenic overlooks.
