This place is known for its Missionary Ridge Local ride, which lasts about 65 minutes, travels through a pre-Civil War tunnel from the 1850s, and features a turntable demonstration.
Inside the museum, you’ll see old steam and diesel locomotives, a caboose, and even passenger cars from the early 1900s.
Kids (and train-loving grownups) will love watching the engines get spun around, and you can grab snacks at the depot café before or after your ride.
2. Chattanooga Zoo
Next up, head over to the Chattanooga Zoo, where you can get face-to-face with red pandas, jaguars, and chimpanzees.
This zoo packs a wild punch into just 12 acres, so it’s super easy to explore without totally wearing out the kids (or your feet).
The Himalayan Passage is a fan favorite, home to snow leopards and white-cheeked gibbons, with viewing areas that bring you close to the animals.

You’ll wind through a multi-story canyon-like exhibit filled with rushing water, showcasing the river’s journey from mountains to sea.
You can touch real stingrays and watch penguins waddle around like tiny tuxedoed goofballs.
Don’t miss the butterfly garden, where hundreds of fluttery little stunners might land right on your shoulder.
4. Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery
Once the kids are tired out, treat yourself to a stop at the Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery in downtown Chattanooga.
This place is small but mighty, with a working still, rows of aging barrels, and more than 40 unique experimental whiskey batches they’ve tested since opening.
The guided tour lasts about an hour, and it ends with a one-of-a-kind whiskey flight featuring their latest offerings, including some you can only try there.
Even if you’re not a whiskey nerd, the stories behind each blend and the cozy, industrial vibe make this a super fun stop.
5. Lookout Mountain Incline Railway
Ready for a serious wow moment?
Hop on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway, one of the steepest passenger railways in the world, climbing a wild 72.7% grade at its steepest point.
The ride is just about a mile, but the views out of the glass roof as you inch up the mountain are next-level, especially if you’re not afraid of heights.
Before you head up, enjoy an ice cream at Clumpies right by the starting point of the Incline Railway.
Once at the top, you can explore Point Park and snap a million photos of the Chattanooga skyline below.
6. Ruby Falls
Located within Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls is where you get to explore what’s hiding deep inside the mountain.
You’ll take an elevator 260 feet down into a cave, then walk through twisty tunnels filled with wild rock formations until you reach the main event.
At the end of the path, you’re met by the stunning Ruby Falls, a 145-foot underground waterfall crashing down inside a cavern lit up with colorful lights.
The guided tour lasts about an hour and 20 minutes, and it’s a cool 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round down there, so bring some layers even if it’s blazing outside.
7. Rock City
Just a few minutes’ drive from Ruby Falls, Rock City feels like stepping into the wildest garden maze you’ve ever seen, complete with epic views and gnomes.
The Enchanted Trail winds through massive boulders, across a swinging bridge, and ends at Lover’s Leap, where you can supposedly see seven states on a clear day.
There are waterfalls, flower-filled paths, and a spot called Fairyland Caverns that has glowing scenes from your favorite fairy tales tucked inside the rocks.
It’s part nature walk, part fantasy land, and a place that’s sure to be a hit with the whole family.
